Nicknames: Katie, McShovin' (St. Raymond Roller Derby)
Birthday: June 1st, 1996
Pronouns/Gender: she/her trans lesbian
Physical Description: Katie's built like a brick house--stocky, strong, red. 5'11" and broad-shouldered, she carries both muscle from a semi-successful athletics career and a little bit of belly pudge from a very successful pizza career. Her hair is bright orange, long and straight--though as part of her trademark style she has it pulled up and out of her freckled face, showing off good cheek structure and a strong nose. Her eyes are brown and almost always smiling. Her fashion sense is best described as classic flannel lesbian with space accessories and redbubble-quirky t-shirts, mixed with neon 90s workout chic.
Occupation: Driving gig-work--Grubhub, Uber, Doordash. Occasionally does freelance work with the press.
Personality: Katie brings fun wherever she goes. Good-natured and gregarious, she likes to be at parties and connect with people and be active whenever she can, which means that anything that requires her to stay still is...difficult, on the best of days. She loves people, and she likes to think she understands people, and in the moments where her attention is held she is an active listener, an advocate and powerful supporter of all things that feel good. However, her flights of fancy mean that her mind is often multiple places at once, and she is notorious for cancelling plans as well as allergic to being anywhere on-time. It's more than just loving people--she craves validation, and will rearrange any part of her schedule in search of approval from the special someone who has currently captured her interest. However, even this interest is vacuous and waxes and wanes--someone that Katie adores one week will be someone she ditches the next. She knows that her presence is a delight, but also fears (knows) that she's never going to be lovable enough to permanently capture one person's affection, and so she grabs it in snippets whenever she can.
Backstory: Katie isn't sure of the exact circumstances surrounding her birth--what she does know is that she grew up with a single dad who was fairly consistently on the road throughout New England and the midwest. She remembers hotel rooms more than any singular home, working on homeschool in the back seat of her dad's sedan, travelling the open road. Technically they had a house just southwest of St. Raymond, but it wasn't much lived in or maintained except when her father was between jobs. Other times, she would spend months at a time staying in residence with her aunt Carol and her children while her dad 'sorted things out'. Carol's house was a single pillar of support in an otherwise whirlwind existence, but Katie almost preferred the storm--the chaos kept her busy mind occupied. During the months she was in a singular place, she would go to public school, disruptive in class yet excelling in sports, but it was only a matter of time before her father was back at the job and he pulled her from school to be on the road. Katie learned more 'practical' skills, how to work with cars, how to hem her own clothes.
She stayed singularly close to her father until her teens, when she started to reconcile her interest in girls and her own presentation as one. While not a particularly religious man, her father was a conservative one, openly and strongly disapproving of any lifestyle that didn't follow a nuclear family. In spite of reservations, at 16 Katie chose to come out to her father, who threatened to leave her on the streets. Her aunt Carol intervened, and by 17 she was living in the Catigern home full-time, brought into her aunt's care even though she was just shy of reaching the age of majority. Katie started SRU the year after that with her chosen name, majoring in journalism and enjoying moderate success on the women's intramural volleyball team.
After she graduated with her degree in media studies, Katie moved out with money she'd been saving as a pizza delivery driver and began to shop around for entry level gigs. Ultimately, she found the hiring process to be gruelling and unfriendly to someone who needed to be paid for their work. Katie still goes after freelance writing position from time to time, but has taken more time for herself, to live and enjoy the space that she's in. For the past few years she's been playing with the St. Raymond Roller Derby under the name McShovin'.
